Why Some Shows are Not Available on Netflix With Ads?

Netflix has launched a new subscription tier called "Netflix Basic with Ads," which is cheaper but comes with certain limitations. Between 5% to 10% of the TV shows and movies available on the regular plans are not accessible on this new tier due to licensing restrictions. Some of the popular shows and movies that are not included in this plan are also unavailable.

Netflix's COO, Greg Peters, mentioned that they intend to work on reducing these restrictions over time. In addition to limited content, the ad-supported plan also lacks the ability to download titles for offline viewing. However, like the regular Basic plan, subscribers can still stream content on one device at a time, with video quality up to 720p HD.

Netflix Discontinued Its "Basic" Ad-free Plan in The United States and The United Kingdom

Netflix has decided to remove its $9.99 advertising-free "Basic" plan in the U.S. and U.K., leaving only three options for new subscribers: the $6.99 "Standard With Ads" tier, the $15.49 "Standard" plan, and the $19.99 "Premium" plan, both of which are ad-free.

Current subscribers on the Basic plan can continue using it, but new or returning subscribers won't have access to this option anymore. The move is expected to push new users to either the ad-supported plan or the standard plan, which costs more than twice as much as the ad-supported option.

According to Netflix executives, the ad tier is already generating higher revenue per subscriber compared to the standard tier. The company remains neutral about which tier users choose, but the elimination of the Basic plan is likely to steer new subscribers toward the ad-supported or standard plans.

The advertising tier launched as "Basic With Ads" last year, has amassed nearly 5 million monthly active users, as reported during the company's upfront advertising presentation. Although active users and subscribers are different metrics, this indicates a growing interest in the ad-supported offering.

Netflix also revealed that engagement on the ad plan is similar to its ad-free plans, indicating that users are spending significant time with the service, which can lead to increased advertising revenue.

This decision to remove the Basic plan in the U.S. follows a similar move made in Canada a month prior. Netflix is scheduled to report earnings after the market close on the same day.
