Barry Manilow, originally named Barry Alan Pincus, was born on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Edna Manilow and Harold Kelliher, a truck driver of Irish heritage. His mother insisted that his father adopt the surname Pincus, which belonged to a Jewish relative from the past. Unfortunately, Barry's parents split when he was very young, and his mother's Jewish family prevented any further connection between Barry and his dad.
His background comprised Russian Jewish roots from his mother's side and Jewish and Catholic descent from his father's. Interestingly, Barry's paternal grandfather altered the family name to Manilow shortly before Barry's bar mitzvah. Growing up in Brooklyn's Williamsburg area, he graduated from Eastern District High School in 1961.
During high school, he met Susan Deixler, whom he later married for a brief period. He began studies at City College of New York and New York College of Music, where he worked at CBS to fund his education. Eventually, he pursued musical theater at Juilliard Performing Arts School.
