Who is Lia Thomas?
Lia Catherine Thomas is an American swimmer who started attending the University of Pennsylvania in 2017 and graduated in May 2022. She swam for the university's men's swim team from 2017 to 2020 and its women's swim team from 2021 to 2022.
In March 2022, she made history by becoming the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I national championship in any sport, winning the women's 500-yard freestyle event. However, starting in 2021, Thomas became involved in the public debate about transgender women in sports.
