Southampton Football Club
Southampton Football Club is a professional English football club located in Southampton, Hampshire. They currently compete in the EFL Championship, which is the second tier of English football. Since 2001, their home ground has been St Mary's Stadium, replacing their previous venue, The Dell. The team dons red and white shirts. They earned the nickname "The Saints" due to their origins as a church football team at St Mary's Church. Southampton shares a long-standing rivalry with Portsmouth, known as the South Coast derby, which is fueled in part by their close geographical proximity and maritime histories.
The club was founded in 1885 and joined the Southern League as Southampton St. Mary's in 1894, eventually dropping the St. Mary's from their name three years later. Over the years, Southampton achieved six Southern League titles and reached the FA Cup finals in 1900 and 1902. They were then invited to be founder members of the Football League Third Division in 1920. The team secured promotion as champions of the Third Division South in 1921-22 and remained in the Second Division for 31 years until their relegation in 1953. Under the leadership of Ted Bates, they clinched the Third Division championship in 1959-60 and earned promotion to the First Division at the end of the 1965-66 season. During eight seasons in the top-flight, they achieved a remarkable feat by winning the FA Cup as a Second Division team in 1976, defeating Manchester United 1-0. Manager Lawrie McMenemy guided the club back to the top-flight with promotion in 1977-78.
Southampton reached the League Cup final in 1979 and finished as runners-up in the First Division in 1983-84, just three points behind Liverpool. As founder members of the Premier League in 1992, they made another appearance in the FA Cup final in 2003. However, relegation followed in 2005, leading to their drop to the third tier in 2009. Nevertheless, Southampton displayed resilience and won the Football League Trophy in 2010, securing successive promotions from League One and the Championship in 2010-11 and 2011-12. After an 11-year stint in the top flight, during which they were EFL Cup runners-up in 2017, they faced relegation once again in 2023.
