Billy Milne
William Milne DCM, also known locally as "Stir", was a Scottish footballer who played as a right-back for Arsenal from 1921 to 1927. Born in Buckie, Banffshire, Milne started his career at his hometown club, Buckie Thistle in the Scottish Highland Football League, although his career was interrupted early on by World War I. During the war, Milne served with the Seaforth Highlanders in France and won the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1918.
After the war, Milne moved to England to join Arsenal, where he quickly became a key player in the team's defence. He was known for his tenacity, strength, and tackling ability, and he helped the club win the FA Cup in 1927. Milne made 124 appearances for Arsenal in total, scoring 14 goals.
In 1927, Milne was forced to retire from playing due to a serious leg injury. However, he remained at Arsenal as a trainer, and he went on to become a highly respected figure in the club. Milne served as Arsenal's trainer for over 30 years, and he was a key part of the club's success during this time. He helped the club win three First Division titles, two FA Cups, and one League Cup.
