Crystal Palace Football Club
Crystal Palace Football Club, commonly known as Palace, is a professional football team situated in Selhurst within the Borough of Croydon, South London, England. The team competes at the highest level of English football, which is the Premier League. Although established as a professional club in 1905 at the Crystal Palace Exhibition building, the club's origins can be traced back to 1861 when an amateur Crystal Palace football team played on a cricket pitch inside the Palace grounds. The professional club used the FA Cup Final stadium as their home venue until 1915, when the outbreak of the First World War led to their relocation. In 1924, they settled into their present home at Selhurst Park.
The amateur club was among the original founding members of the Football Association in 1863 and participated in the inaugural FA Cup competition in 1871–72. However, records about the club become scarce around 1876. Crystal Palace reemerged as a professional team in 1905, initially competing in the Southern League. They joined the Football League in 1920 and have predominantly played in the top two tiers of English football. From 1964 onward, Palace has only spent three seasons outside the second tier, between 1974 and 1977. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, during their time in the top flight, the club achieved their highest league finish ever – third place in the old First Division, now referred to as the Premier League, during the 1990–91 season. However, they narrowly missed qualifying for the UEFA Cup due to limited European spots for English clubs after the Heysel Stadium disaster led to a UEFA ban being lifted. This era also saw Palace reach the 1990 FA Cup Final, losing to Manchester United in a replay. The club was also a founding member of the Premier League in 1992.
Following their relegation from the Premier League in 1998, Palace faced a period of decline due to financial troubles. The club went into administration twice in 1999 and 2010. Nonetheless, they managed to recover and returned to the Premier League in 2013, where they have remained since. They reached another FA Cup final in 2016 but ended up as runners-up to Manchester United.
The team's kit colors were claret and blue until 1973, when they switched to the red and blue vertical stripes that are worn today. Crystal Palace holds intense rivalries with Brighton & Hove Albion, as well as with fellow South London clubs Millwall and Charlton Athletic.
