• Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley is the third child among eight siblings, born into an Australian Aboriginal (Wiradjuri) family.
• Her father, Ken Goolagong, worked as a sheep shearer, while her mother, Melinda, was a homemaker.
• Born in Griffith, New South Wales, Evonne grew up in the small country town of Barellan.
• Despite the challenges and prejudice faced by Aboriginal people in Australia, Goolagong's early love for tennis began in Barellan. Bill Kurtzman, a local resident, noticed her interest, encouraging her to play at the local courts.
• In 1965, Vic Edwards, the proprietor of a tennis school in Sydney, learned about Goolagong's potential and traveled to Barellan to see her play. Impressed, he convinced her parents to let her move to Sydney.
• Evonne attended Willoughby Girls High School in Sydney, where she completed her School Certificate in 1968.
• During her time in Sydney, she lived with the family of Vic Edwards, who became her legal guardian, coach, and manager.
• This move to Sydney marked a significant step in Goolagong's tennis career, setting the stage for her remarkable achievements in the sport.
