During a court appearance on Tuesday, the man accused of causing a crash that resulted in a teenage volleyball player losing both her legs over the weekend was refused bond in St. Louis.

At noon, Daniel Riley, who is 21 years old, appeared in court for the first time on charges of second-degree assault, armed criminal action, and multiple misdemeanors. According to police, he was driving at a high speed and did not apply brakes when he collided with a car, which trapped Janae Edmondson from Smyrna, Tennessee, between two cars.

The athlete, Edmondson, who was in St. Louis for a volleyball tournament, suffered critical injuries and had to have both her legs amputated. Her parents reported that she had recently signed with a college on the preceding Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Edmondson's parents were present in the courtroom when the judge refused Riley's request to decrease his bond and ordered him to remain in custody without bail. His defense attorney pleaded not guilty.

On Tuesday, the parents of the girl, who were present during the accident, provided a poignant account in court. They shared that their daughter is currently reliant on a ventilator and is unaware that she has lost her legs.

The incident occurred when the family was heading back to their lodging after the first day of Edmondson's volleyball competition, and a car abruptly approached them.

"Her father recounted how the car ripped her from his grasp," and with her left leg badly injured and her right leg amputated, he utilized two belts as makeshift tourniquets to stem the blood flow while awaiting medical attention. The father, who had served in the military for 11 years, expressed gratitude for his training in applying a tourniquet, and believed it was divine intervention that someone offered him a second belt when he asked for assistance from those present.

He stated that "the damage he caused to our family and especially our daughter is irreversible," and now he must establish the groundwork for her future. They will need to inform her that she no longer has her legs and help her move forward in life.

Janae's mother recounted how her spouse played a critical role in rescuing their daughter, while she kept her daughter's head elevated and watched her vitality wane.

By Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe campaign to assist Janae had raised over $150,000.

As per official court documents, Riley had been confined to his residence with a GPS device as part of his sentencing for charges linked to a robbery that occurred in 2020. The I-Team, through acquired records, confirmed that Riley had transgressed the GPS monitoring conditions over 40 times, with the most recent violation taking place on February 13th.

The upcoming hearing to determine Riley's detention is scheduled for February 27th.

Our utmost concern and sympathies are with Janae Edmonson and her loved ones following the tragic incident. It is imperative that the criminal justice system conducts a thorough investigation, pursues prosecution, and ensures the perpetrator is held responsible for their actions.
