Jon Stewart, originally named Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, was born in New York City on November 28, 1962. Coming from an Ashkenazi Jewish background, his family traces their ancestry to Austria, Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus.

Stewart's parents are Marian Laskin, a teacher, and Donald Leibowitz, a physics professor. In 2001, Stewart legally changed his surname to Stewart. He attended Lawrence High School and graduated from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1984.

Before embarking on a career in comedy, Stewart held various jobs, including hosting the MTV series You Wrote It, You Watch It in 1992. The following year, he debuted his own talk show, The Jon Stewart Show, which featured celebrity interviews and comedy sketches.
