A court has heard that a 16-year-old girl, Kaylea Titford, who passed away due to obesity-related complications was found surrounded by food wrappers and had a dirty deep-fat fryer in her bedroom. Kaylea, who weighed 146kg (22st 13lbs) at the time of her death, had spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which prevented her from using her legs and caused fluid build-up in her brain. Her father, Alun Titford, is currently on trial for manslaughter through gross negligence at Mold crown court, while her mother has already pleaded guilty to the same charge.
The prosecution claims that the neglect demonstrated by Kaylea's dirty and cluttered bedroom, as well as her physical decline and severe obesity, show a significant failure on the part of the couple as parents. The court was told that the neglect was kept "hidden from the outside world" due to consecutive Covid lockdowns, which prevented Kaylea from attending school.
On Thursday, evidence was presented in court from paramedics and police officers who responded to a call at the family's home on October 10th. The first ambulance arrived at 8:10 AM and found Kaylea dead, still sitting upright in bed. Her last reported sighting was by family members at 11 PM the previous night.

In addition to outdated McDonald's food containers and packaging, there was also "junk food" such as chips and soda, according to Griepher's testimony. Maggie Lloyd reported seeing a large Madeira cake and a cluttered space that included piles of items on top of Kaylea's wheelchair. Instead of immediately calling emergency services after discovering Kaylea's body, Titford contacted his mother and Kaylea's grandmother. The first paramedic to arrive, Gareth Wyn-Evans, described the "horrific" odor coming from Kaylea's legs that were covered in absorbent pads and made him nauseous, stating that it was a smell he had never encountered before.
PC Liam Donovan stated in his 14 years as a police officer, he had never felt as physically ill as he did at that moment. The jury was informed that upon the arrival of the undertakers to remove Kaylea's body, Donovan noticed maggots on her mattress. Additionally, he noticed that the electric hoist above her bed seemed to have not been used for some time, as it was switched off at the main source and was covered in cobwebs and what appeared to be fly feces.
PC David Wilkinson stated that upon reaching the house, he spoke to Titford who appeared to be emotional and distressed. The jury was presented with additional body-worn footage that showed Titford smoking on the stairs as one of Kaylea's two elder brothers spoke with the ambulance crew. The pathologist listed the cause of Kaylea's death as inflammation, infection, and ulceration resulting from obesity and its related issues, as well as immobility due to her conditions of spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
