Who Is Kaylea Titford?

The court has heard that a 16-year-old girl named Kaylea Louise Titford, who became morbidly obese during the lockdown period and lived in conditions that were described as "unfit for any animal", died due to serious neglect by her parents. Her body was discovered on dirty sheets with a foul odor, according to the police investigation. While Kaylea's mother Sarah Lloyd Jones has already admitted to manslaughter by gross negligence, her father Alun Titford, who is from Newtown, Powys, denies the same charge at Mold Crown Court.

During the trial, Caroline Rees KC informed the jury that Kaylea had spina bifida, a condition that left her with limited mobility and little feeling from the waist down. She had been using a wheelchair since she was young. When she was found dead at her home, she was extremely overweight, weighing almost 23 stone (146 kg).

Kaylea Titford Parents

The parents of a disabled teenage girl have been sentenced to jail for manslaughter due to the "shocking and prolonged neglect" that led to their daughter's death from morbid obesity during the lockdown period. Kaylea Titford, who had spina bifida and hydrocephalus, was 146kg at the time of her death in October 2020, aged 16. The court heard that she was found lying in a dirty bed, surrounded by rubbish and maggots feeding on her body. The father, Alun Titford, was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence and received a sentence of seven years and six months. The mother, Sarah Lloyd-Jones, who pleaded guilty to the same charge, was sentenced to six years in prison. The judge stated that both parents were equally responsible and culpable for their daughter's death due to their prolonged neglect of her basic needs, including nutrition and hygiene. The case is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK in which parents were charged with killing their child by failing to control their diet.

What Happened To Kaylea Titford Parents?

During the trial, it was revealed that Kaylea had sent multiple texts to her mother, asking for help after soiling herself or when her legs were "leaking." In one message, Kaylea asked her mother to check if she had soiled herself because of the stench. Her mother's response was "FFS," which was interpreted to mean "for fuck's sake." On another occasion, Kaylea complained about flies in her room, to which her mother replied that the flies "like you. Lol."Initially, Lloyd-Jones denied responsibility for the messages, claiming someone else had used her phone. She worked as a carer and had become overwhelmed by the pressure of caring for her family during lockdown, her barrister told the court. The couple had a tumultuous relationship, with Titford being aggressive on multiple occasions.

When police arrived at the family home on October 10, 2020, it was because Titford's mother had called them after he told her that Kaylea was dead in bed. Officers found Kaylea's body surrounded by junk food wrappers, with her hair dirty and matted and her toenails uncut for at least six months. Her skin was severely inflamed and ulcerated, and bottles of urine from her catheter were on the floor by her bed. The family had spent over £1,000 on junk food and takeaways in the three months before Kaylea's death. More than 100 flies were found stuck to flypaper above Kaylea's bed, and her bed linen was soiled. She lay on filthy "puppy pads" that had absorbed leakages from her body. The court heard that her bedroom was being used as a dumping ground for broken appliances, including a dirty deep-fat fryer and a pressure washer.

“Not being funny, but you need to sort Kaylea’s room. It’s a fucking mess,” wrote Sophie on 20 August 2020. “Nothing can be found because of what a mess it is. It’s disgusting. Kaylea had a bag of piss left from this morning and yesterday on the floor. It’s fucking disgusting, mum.”

Are Kaylea Titford Parents Jailed?

A couple in Wales have been sentenced to jail in the country's first televised court hearing for allowing their disabled daughter to become severely overweight and die. Kaylea Titford, who suffered from spina bifida, passed away in October 2020, after her parents allowed her condition to deteriorate to the point of death. At the time of her passing, the 16-year-old weighed 14 kg with a BMI of 70. While Sarah Lloyd-Jones, 40, had previously admitted to manslaughter by gross negligence, Alun Titford, 45, denied the charges but was found guilty after a trial in January. Kaylea had been bed-bound for many months before her death, and had not used the toilet or shower since before lockdown. Her skin was severely inflamed and ulcerated, with maggots observed on her "filthy" body. The family had increased their spending on takeaways as Kaylea's condition worsened.
