Toby Keith Early Life

  • Toby Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, to Carolyn Joan (née Ross) and Hubert K. Covel Jr.
  • Raised alongside a sister and a brother, the family initially lived in Fort Smith, Arkansas, during Keith's grade school years. They later relocated to Moore, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City, when he was still young.
  • During summers, before the family moved to Moore, Keith visited his grandmother in Fort Smith, where his interest in music was sparked by Billie Garner's Supper Club, owned by his grandmother. He began interacting with musicians and started playing on the bandstand, receiving his first guitar at the age of eight.
  • After settling in Moore, Keith attended Highland West Junior High and Moore High School, where he played defensive end on the football team.
  • Upon graduating from Moore High School, Keith ventured into the oil fields, starting as a derrick hand and working his way up to become a supervisor. Simultaneously, he pursued his musical passion and, at the age of 20, formed the Easy Money Band with friends. The band played at local bars and roadhouses, and Keith continued working in the oil industry, sometimes leaving concerts abruptly if paged to work in the oil field.
  • In 1982, as the Oklahoma oil industry faced a downturn, Keith found himself unemployed. Leveraging his football training, he played as a defensive end with the semi-pro Oklahoma City Drillers while still performing with his band. Despite trying out for the United States Football League's Oklahoma Outlaws and not making the team, Keith returned to focus on his music career.
  • Facing skepticism from family and friends, Keith persevered, and by 1984, the Easy Money Band, including members Mike Barnes, T.A. Brauer, and David Saylors, began making a name for themselves on the honky-tonk circuit in Oklahoma and Texas.
