History of Marvel Comics
In 1939, Martin Goodman, a publisher of pulp magazines, ventured into the flourishing world of comic books and established Timely Publications, which would later become Marvel Comics. Having already experienced success with Western pulp publications since 1933, Goodman recognized the immense popularity of comic books as a new medium.
From his office at 330 West 42nd Street in New York City, Goodman assumed multiple roles within the company, including editor, managing editor, and business manager. His brother, Abraham Goodman, held the official title of publisher.
The inaugural release from Timely, Marvel Comics #1 (dated October 1939), featured the debut of the android superhero, the Human Torch, created by Carl Burgos, as well as the introduction of Bill Everett's anti-hero, Namor the Sub-Mariner, among other captivating features.
The issue was an outstanding success, selling nearly 900,000 copies in its initial print run and an additional amount in a subsequent second printing the following month. Although the content for the first issue was sourced from an outside packager called Funnies, Inc., Timely had assembled its own in-house staff by the following year.
The arrival of writer-artist Joe Simon, serving as the company's first true editor, and his collaboration with artist Jack Kirby resulted in the creation of one of the first superheroes with a patriotic theme, Captain America. Captain America Comics #1, released in March 1941, achieved phenomenal sales of almost one million copies.
