 Aaron Gillane Early Life

Gillane's rise to prominence began at Ardscoil Rís in Limerick. On 22 February 2014, he made his appearance as a substitute when Ardscoil Rís secured a 2-13 to 0-04 victory over Scoil na Trionóide from Doon in the Harty Cup final.

While pursuing his studies at Mary Immaculate College, Gillane earned a spot as a forward in the college's senior hurling team. On 25 February 2017, he achieved a Fitzgibbon Cup medal as Mary I successfully defended their title, defeating Carlow Institute of Technology with a score of 3-24 to 1-19 in the final.

Aaron Gillane Career

Club

Gillane became a part of Patrickswell club from a young age and participated in various levels of juvenile and underage competitions. Although he faced some challenges during this time, he joined the junior team at the age of 17 after missing out on the senior panel. It was at this point that Ciarán Carey, a club legend, played a crucial role in convincing him to stay and join the senior team. Gillane's early senior club career coincided with Patrickswell's narrow loss to Na Piarsaigh in the 2015 county final.

As the 2016 Limerick County Championship progressed, Gillane continued to prove himself as a vital member of the starting lineup, sharing the responsibility of free-taking with Diarmaid Byrnes. On 23 October 2016, from the right corner-forward position, he scored seven points, including five frees, as Patrickswell secured their first championship victory in 13 years with a 19-point win over Ballybrown.

In the 2019 county final, Gillane once again played a crucial role, lining up at right corner-forward and contributing six points to help Patrickswell secure a second championship title after a 1-17 to 0-15 victory against Na Piarsaigh.

Inter-county

Minor and under-21

Gillane's journey with the Limerick hurling team began when he was selected for the minor panel just before the 2014 Munster Minor Championship commenced. He made his first appearance for the team on 26 June 2014, coming on as a late substitute in the Munster semi-final against Cork, where Limerick secured a two-point victory. However, he remained on the substitutes' bench for the subsequent Munster final replay, which resulted in a defeat to Waterford. Despite Limerick's qualification for the All-Ireland final against Kilkenny, Gillane was not included in the 24-man match-day panel.

Following a season without any underage inter-county involvement, Gillane made his debut for the Limerick under-21 team on 28 June 2016, playing as right corner-forward in a Munster quarter-final victory over Cork. Although he was dropped from the starting fifteen for the semi-final defeat against Tipperary, he secured a starting role and took on the free-taking duties in his second and final season with the under-21 team. In the 2017 Munster Under-21 Championship, Gillane emerged as the top scorer with 0-29 and earned a winners' medal as Limerick defeated Cork in the final. On 9 September 2017, he contributed seven points in Limerick's All-Ireland final win over Kilkenny. His outstanding performances throughout the championship earned him the accolade of being the overall top scorer with 0-44, and he was later named on the Bord Gáis Energy Team of the Year.
