According to a recent report from Deadline, Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of acclaimed filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, is set to make her directorial debut with the upcoming horror film, The Watchers. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by A.M. Shine and has been acquired by New Line Cinema after a highly competitive bidding process. Shyamalan has previously worked as a second unit director on several films, including her father's recent movies Old and Knock at the Cabin. She also achieved success as a screenwriter on Apple TV+'s science fiction series, Servant.
The Watchers is a spine-chilling adventure set in the remote forests of Galway, where humans are kept captive by mysterious creatures. The story follows the journey of a young woman named Mina, whose car breaks down close to the forest. After escaping the creatures, she and other captives remain in a concrete bunker, under the observation of the enigmatic animals. Together, they must unravel the mystery of who the watchers are and why they keep humans as prisoners. The film is scheduled to release on June 7, 2024, with filming set to begin later this year.
New Line Cinema, the distributors for the film, have a long history of producing horror projects. The studio is known for its involvement in James Wan's Conjuring universe, which features the lives of demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, solving paranormal cases across the country. In a recent interview with Collider's Steven Weintraub, the director revealed that he has three clear ideas for future films. Moreover, Universal has already scheduled the release of one of Shyamalan's original ideas on April 5, 2024, indicating that the director is not taking a break from work anytime soon.
