The story was crafted by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty, who also produced the film alongside Natalie Qasabian. Serving as a standalone sequel to the 2018 film Searching, Missing stars Storm Reid, Joaquim de Almeida, Ken Leung, Amy Landecker, Daniel Henney, and Nia Long. The plot revolves around June Allen, a teenager who embarks on a mission to locate her missing mother after she vanishes while on vacation in Colombia with her new partner.
The idea of an anthology sequel to Searching was announced in 2019, and in January 2021, Merrick and Johnson, who had previously worked on editing the first film, were confirmed as the directors for their feature debuts. When the expected week passes, June is assigned the task of picking up her mother and Kevin from Los Angeles International Airport. However, they never arrive. As the FBI's efforts fail to yield any progress, June takes it upon herself to investigate using her digital skills and tools. She also enlists the help of Javier, a gig worker from Colombia, who assists her in exchange for a small fee.
Through hacking into Kevin's Gmail account, June uncovers multiple aliases and a criminal history of scamming women for money. Convinced that Kevin has abducted her mother, June sends Javier to Colombia in search of clues regarding their whereabouts.
She traces Kevin's previous movements to a location in Nevada, where she meets Jimmy, who claims to be a pastor at a Christian rehabilitation center for ex-convicts. Jimmy informs June that Kevin has reformed and genuinely loves Grace.
