He advanced to the night's final challenge but injured himself by striking the volunteer padded combatant. Because he could not use his damaged hand to grasp anything, it is thought that he broke his thumb. Later, he claimed on Twitter that he had torn the major ligaments in his thumb on the hand he used most frequently.

He promised his wife that he wouldn't get wounded while filming the show, and he reasoned that if he took part in the rope challenge, which required celebrities to balance across a canyon using a harness and two ropes, he wouldn't get hurt. It appears that viewers weren't as understanding of his decision to depart as the other cast members and special forces agents leading the training.
