Why is Ed Cooley Leaving Providence?

Ed Cooley, a well-known figure in the world of college basketball, recently made headlines when he left his position as head coach of the Providence College men's basketball team to take on the same role at Georgetown University. Cooley had been with Providence for a decade, leading the Friars to five NCAA Tournament appearances and a Big East Championship during his tenure. The move to Georgetown represents a new challenge for Cooley and an opportunity to further his coaching career. Despite his deep connection with the Providence community, Cooley was drawn to the prestige of the Hoyas' program. He is widely respected as one of the best coaches in the Big East, and his experience and knowledge make him a valuable addition to Georgetown.

Is Ed Cooley Leaving Providence?

Yes, Ed Cooley has left Providence. After spending a dozen seasons with Providence, Ed Cooley has left the university to become the head coach at Georgetown University. Throughout his tenure with the Friars, Cooley won 242 games and led the team to five NCAA Tournament appearances and a Big East Championship. While rumors of his departure had been circulating for weeks, the official announcement came as no surprise. Despite being linked to other coaching positions in the past, such as Michigan in 2019, Cooley remained loyal to Providence until the Georgetown opportunity arose. Leaving behind his childhood home, Cooley is eager to tackle this new challenge and take his coaching career to the next level in the nation's capital.  However, he has recently accepted the head coaching position at Georgetown University, so he will no longer be coaching at Providence.

Georgetown Hires Ed Cooley

Georgetown University has hired Ed Cooley as their new head coach. Ed Cooley, the former head coach of Providence College, has been officially announced as Georgetown's new head coach, putting an end to weeks of speculation about his departure from Providence. Georgetown representatives virtually met with Cooley at his East Greenwich home on Sunday before the announcement was made on Monday. Cooley, who has led Providence to regular appearances in the NCAA Tournament, will be taking over from Patrick Ewing, the former Georgetown player who was let go after the Big East tournament. During his 12-year tenure with Providence, Cooley amassed a record of 242-153 and led the Friars to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last nine years it was held. He was quickly identified as the top candidate for the Georgetown opening due to his strong ties to the legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr., whom Cooley grew up rooting for. Despite being a Providence native, Cooley was a fan of Thompson and the Hoyas, as Thompson had played college basketball at Providence.
