Why Was Emmett Till Killed?

Emmett Till was born and grown in Chicago, Illinois. During the summer holiday in August 1955, he was seeing relatives near Money, Mississippi, in the Mississippi Delta region. He talked to 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant, the white, marital proprietor of a small grocery store there. Although what occurred at the store is a point of dispute, Emmett Till was charged with flirting with, touching, or whistling at Carolyn Bryant. Emmett Till's interaction with Bryant, maybe unwittingly, disobeyed the unwritten code of behavior for a black male interacting with a white female in the Jim Crow-era South. Several nights behind the incident in the store, Bryant's hubby Roy and his half-brother J.W. Milam, who was armed, moved to Till's great-uncle's house and abducted Emmett. They carried him away then beat and injured him before shooting him in the head and dropping his body in the Tallahatchie River. Three days after, the boy’s mutilated and swollen body was found and recovered from the river.

Did Emmett Till Actually Whistle?

It was noted that Emmett Till then whistled at, touched the hand or waist of, or flirted with the lady as he was exiting the store. Whatever the fact, Emmett Till did not mention the incident to his great-uncle. In the earlier morning hours of August 28, Roy Bryant, the cashier’s hubby, and J.W. Milam, Bryant’s half-brother, pushed their way into Wright’s home and seized Emmett Till at gunpoint. Bryant and Milam hardly beat the boy, soaking out one of his eyes.
