In Tears of the Kingdom, the captivating open-world action-adventure gameplay from its predecessor, Breath of the Wild (2017), is retained. As players assume the role of Link, they embark on a thrilling journey through the vast expanse of Hyrule, now expanded to include two new areas: the sky, adorned with numerous floating islands, and the Depths, a mysterious underground realm.
In this vast landscape, players must search for weapons, gather valuable resources, and undertake challenging quests to progress in the game. Link has the freedom to explore Hyrule on foot, traverse treacherous terrains by climbing, ride horses to swiftly traverse the land, and glide gracefully using paragliders.
A notable addition to Tears of the Kingdom is the introduction of Zonai devices, versatile tools that offer various functionalities to aid players in combat, propulsion, and exploration, among other tasks. These devices enhance the gameplay experience by providing new strategic options and avenues for creative problem-solving. In a departure from the previous game, the traditional runes have been replaced with five new powers: Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall, and Autobuild.
The Ultrahand power allows players to interact with and manipulate different objects, enabling them to pick up and move items of various sizes and attach them together. This feature can be combined with the Zonai devices, allowing players to create unique vehicles or constructs. Fuse, another new power, empowers Link to combine different materials, equipment, or objects in the game world to enhance the attributes and durability of his shield or weapon.
For example, by fusing an explosive object with an arrow, players can create an arrow that detonates upon impact, inflicting significant damage. Autobuild introduces a convenient mechanic that instantly reconstructs a device previously crafted using the Ultrahand. It automatically utilizes nearby devices and objects to rebuild the structure, even generating replacement parts if necessary, albeit at the cost of zonaite, a valuable resource.
Ascend, as the name suggests, enables Link to move vertically through solid surfaces, opening up new possibilities for exploration and traversal. Lastly, Recall grants the ability to rewind the movement of objects, allowing players to correct mistakes or manipulate the environment to their advantage.
Returning from Breath of the Wild, players will encounter Shrines and Korok seeds throughout their journey. Clearing shrines rewards players with a Light of Blessing. Collecting four of these Lights enables Link to either increase his maximum heart count by one or expand the size of his stamina wheel, enhancing his overall capabilities. Korok seeds, a familiar collectible, can be exchanged to increase Link's inventory capacity, allowing him to carry more melee weapons, shields, and bows.
Within the Depths, a perilous realm accessed through chasms on the surface, a new threat awaits: a viscous substance known as gloom. Whenever Link comes into contact with enemies covered in gloom or sustains attacks from them, his maximum heart count temporarily decreases by one. To restore his full health potential, Link must either return to the surface or seek out lightroots, large luminous plants found in the Depths that replenish his maximum hearts.

Set several years after the events of Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom unveils a captivating narrative within the kingdom of Hyrule, marking the conclusion of the Zelda timeline. The story centers around Link and Zelda as they embark on a perilous quest to investigate a cavern located beneath Hyrule Castle. Unbeknownst to them, the cavern has become a source of gloom, a toxic substance responsible for spreading illness among the people of Hyrule.
Intrigued by the mysteries hidden within, Link and Zelda descend deeper into the cavern, unveiling a mural that chronicles the founding of Hyrule and a legendary conflict known as the Imprisoning War.As they venture further, their actions unwittingly awaken a dormant mummy imbued with the power of gloom. The ensuing battle leaves Link's right arm severely injured, the Master Sword shattered, and Hyrule Castle lifted skyward by the mummy.
In a moment of desperation, Zelda falls into the depths below, vanishing alongside a mysterious artifact. Miraculously, Link is saved by a disembodied arm, which had previously restrained the mummy. Awakening on the Great Sky Island, he discovers that his damaged arm has been replaced by a mystical prosthetic. Guided by the spirit of Rauru, a Zonai, Link sets out to traverse the Great Sky Island, guided by Rauru, the source of his newfound arm.
Throughout his journey, Link encounters reports of a cataclysmic event known as the Upheaval, which has wreaked havoc across Hyrule. Determined to restore order, Link investigates the various anomalies plaguing the kingdom, joining forces with familiar allies along the way.
This includes Sidon, the Zora prince-turned-king, Tulin, a skilled Rito archer and the son of Link's past ally Teba, Yunobo, the Goron president of the mining company YunoboCo, and Riju, the chief of the Gerudo tribe. These sages pass down secret stones, artifacts imbued with their own power, which Link and his allies wield to unlock new abilities and augment their strength.
However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when Zelda, who was presumed missing, reveals herself to be an impostor serving the Demon King, Ganondorf. The imposter, known as Phantom Ganon, is swiftly vanquished by Link and his comrades.
Continuing his quest, Link encounters Mineru, another ancient sage who has managed to maintain a physical presence through spiritual projection. With Mineru's guidance and the aid of Dragon's Tears scattered throughout Hyrule, Link delves into the secrets of Zelda's fate. It is revealed that the artifact which vanished with Zelda transported her back in time to an ancient era.
There, she encounters Rauru, the first king of Hyrule, and Sonia, the kingdom's first queen. In the past, Ganondorf kills Sonia, usurps her secret stone, and ascends to become the dreaded Demon King. In a desperate bid to combat Ganondorf's rise, Rauru appoints Zelda, Mineru, and the leaders of the Zora, Rito, Gorons, and Gerudo tribes as sages. Ultimately, Rauru sacrifices himself to seal Ganondorf's power.
Zelda, now armed with the Master Sword, takes on the responsibility of tasking the sages with aiding Link in his future endeavors. To ensure the restoration of the Master Sword and its safe delivery to Link, Zelda swallows her secret stone, undergoing a transformative process known as draconification, wherein she becomes the Light Dragon.
In the present timeline, Link purges the Great Deku Tree in Korok Forest of gloom, freeing the sacred site from its corrupting influence. He then retrieves the restored Master Sword from the Light Dragon and descends beneath Hyrule Castle to confront Ganondorf. With the support of Sidon, Tulin, Yunobo, Riju, and Mineru, Link engages in a climactic battle against hordes of monstrous adversaries before finally confronting Ganondorf himself.
Approaching defeat, Ganondorf consumes his secret stone, transforming into the formidable Demon Dragon, and soars into the skies above Hyrule. Guided by the Light Dragon, Link harnesses the power of the Master Sword to shatter Ganondorf's secret stone, ultimately bringing about his demise. Aided by the spirits of Rauru and Sonia, Link and Zelda revert the Light Dragon back to her original form, thus restoring Zelda's human form and regenerating Link's lost arm. As Rauru and Sonia fade away, Link and Zelda reunite on the surface below.
In the aftermath, on the Great Sky Island, Mineru bids a fond farewell to Link and Zelda before departing from the physical realm. The sages vow to protect Hyrule, ensuring its continued prosperity and safeguarding it from future threats.
